What Are the Causes of CKD?

What Are the Causes of CKD?Chronic kidney disease, also known as CKD, is a kind of kidney disease which progressive loss in kidney functions over a period of months or years. So, it is very important to know what causes chronic kidney disease. It is more helpful for kidney disease patients to take effective and proper treatment to treat the disease. The following is the causes of CKD:

Although CKD sometimes is caused by primary diseases of the kidneys themselves, the major causes are diabetes and high blood pressure.

1. High blood pressure

Blood pressure is a measure of the pressure your heart generates in your arteries with each pulse. Too much pressure will damage your body’s organs, leading to heart disease, stroke and worsening of kidney function. If your high blood pressure is not under control for a long time, it will further damage your kidney function. This is because hypertension results from damage by putting strain on the small blood vessels in the kidneys which will prevent the filtering process from working properly. Eventually your kidney function decreases when another medical condition initially causes the disease. The cause of high blood pressure is linked with the following risk factors:

Age (as you get older, you have a greater chance of getting high blood pressure)

Family history of high blood pressure

Obesity

Lack of exercise

High amount of salt in your diet

Stress

Smoking

Excessive alcohol consumption

2. Diabetes

When someone has diabetes, the body will not produce enough insulin or make effective use of insulin. Insulin is used to regulate levels of glucose in the blood and keep the level at normal balance.

If diabetes is not under control, too much glucose will accumulate in your blood. The glucose can damage the tiny filters in the kidneys, which affects the ability of your kidneys to filter out wastes and fluids.

3. Other causes

Other causes can also damage kidneys and cause chronic kidney diseases include:

3.1 Kidney disease and infections, such as polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, or a kidney problem you were born with.

3.2 Long-term use of medicines, such as anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin and ibuprofen.

3.3 Blockages due to kidney stones or prostate disease.

High blood pressure and diabetes are two major causes of chronic kidney disease. If they are not under control for a long time, it will speed up the progression of your kidney disease which will be likely to develop to kidney failure.

Therefore, once you have high blood pressure or diabetes, you should treat it timely so as to prevent you from getting chronic kidney disease. If you have any problem of CKD to consult, please feel free to contact us.
