Eat less salt

This is especially important for people with ADPKD, as too much salt raises blood pressure. If you are an adult, aim to keep your daily salt intake to no more than 5g-6g - about 1 teaspoon - and preferably less. This includes not just salt added at the table or during cooking, but also ‘hidden’ salt in foods such as bread, breakfast cereals, bacon, ham, sausages, takeaways, and ready meals.

You will find how much salt is in foods by looking at the package labels. Read how much salt is contained in the food per 100ml or 100g. This is a good guide. Be aware that some manufacturers show salt content byportion size, which may be less than 100g.

Eat more fruit and vegetables

This is important because fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and help lower your blood pressure. Aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, and try to eat more.

Eat less fat and sugar

Reducing your intake of fat and sugar will help you to maintain a healthy weight and reduce your risk of heart disease.

Eat a moderate amount of protein

Every day for every kg of your body weight, try to aim for 0.8g-1g protein from fish and meat low in saturated fat (e.g. chicken). You can eat more protein if you are a manual worker or engage in strenuous exercise. If you are vegetarian, substitute with soy products as long as they are not high in salt. The British Heart Foundation has advice on protein foods low in saturated fat.
