How to Test PKD

Polycystic Kidney Disease(PKD) is a genetic kidney disease in which fluid-filled cysts form in the kidneys. PKD may impair kidney function and cause kidney failure. The earlier you detect it, the better you take treatment on healing it. Then what tests can help you diagnose polycystic kidney disease?

PKD is an inherited disorder. Therefore, your doctors will probably review your family history. They may initially order you to do the following:

1. A complete blood count(CBC) which aims to look for anemia or signs of infection.

2. A urinalysis looking for blood or protein

In the early stage of PKD, there is no abnormal urine. In middle and late stage, with the severely damaged kidney function, patients will have microscopic hematuria and some patients will have proteinuria. If patients experience kidney stone and infection, there will be white blood cells and pus cells in their urinalysis.

3. Urine osmotic pressure assay

In the early lesion of PKD, there are only several cysts, which can also cause damaged renal enrichment function. This change of renal enrichment function does not correspond with renal structure completely, but it can be related to abnormal response in which kidneys are fight against diuretic hormone. If you have polycystic kidney disease, the renal enrichment function is decreased earlier than glomerular filtration rate.

4. Serum creatinine

With advanced kidney damage, serum creatinine will be high progressively. Creatinine clearance rate is major indicator of kidney function.

5. KUB(kidney ureter bladder)

It shows increased renal shadow and irregular kidney shape.

6. Abdominal ultrasound

The most useful, non-invasive study using sound waves to look for cysts

7. Abdominal CT Scan

It can detect smaller cysts in the kidney; use X-Rays to build a cross-section of your abdomen.
