The diet principles for kidney failure patients after kidney transplant

The proper diet for kidney failure patients after kidney transplantMost post-transplant patients are eager to eat all the foods they have been avoided for years. No matter what the foods are high potassium, high phosphorus, high protein, etc all become possible in a post-transplant diet. However, post-transplant patients are having a more limited diet than they were before transplant. Well, what are diet principles for kidney failure patients after kidney transplant?

1. Enough protein intake

In the first month after kidney transplant, you will be recovering from the stress of surgery. It is important for you to consume enough protein and total calories to help your wounds heal. Besides, high doses of prednisone can cause muscle breakdown, so you also need added protein to help overcome muscle breakdown. In this condition, the following foods are recommended for you such as fish, lean meat, dairy products, eggs and egg substitutes, etc.

2. Low sugar intake

Body’s ability to use its blood sugar for energy can be decreased by some medications, which will cause increased blood sugar, called hyperglycemia or steroid-induced diabetes. Therefore, patients with kidney transplant should avoid sugar-rich foods like honey, syrup, jams, jellies, marmalades. Sugar pies, puddings, soft drinks, fruit ice and so on. Avoiding concentrated carbohydrates will help decrease the side effects of steroid medications.

3. Restrict sodium or salt intake

Prednisone is able to increase sodium and water retention and increase blood pressure. In this case, not only kidney transplant patients but also all kidney disease patients should follow a low sodium intake, so it is best to limit salt when cooking and not add salt at the table, because salt contains sodium. High sodium foods include commercial soup, like canned broth and canned soup, processed meat, processed vegetables, beverages and salt substitutes.

4. Balance potassium intake

Some medication can induce high potassium or low potassium level. High or low potassium level both will cause problems with muscle and heart function. High potassium foods should be limited, such as bananas, leafy greens, pumpkins, potatoes, lentils, tomatoes, dried beans, chocolates, nuts and melons, oranges, etc.
